Designated and proposed protected areas in the DRC
(data source: ICCN et al., 2009)
More than 60% of the areas considered of importance for birds (IBAs) and almost 40% of the
range of occurrence of the eastern gorilla are inside designated protected areas. In the case of
bonobo and common chimpanzee, this figure is below 20%. These estimates suggest that :
a) The DRC’s protected areas can make an important contribution to the maintenance of
carbon stocks and biodiversity (although protected area success depends on their
management and pressures exerted on them, e.g. Campbell
et al.
, 2008); and
b) Management for REDD+ in areas of biodiversity importance that are not currently within
protected areas can bring significant biodiversity benefits if it is based on appropriate
strategies (Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity, 2009).
