While knowledge on the location of recent forest cover loss can be helpful in the planning of
REDD+, the mechanism will also need to address the drivers of deforestation. Four main
deforestation drivers have been identified in the DRC: farming and fire wood harvesting around
urban zones, where human population density is high and still increasing; commercial logging and
related road infrastructures and settlements; mining and related road infrastructures and
settlements; and informal logging in easily accessible areas (Ministry of Environment Nature
Conservation and Tourism, 2010). Including spatial information on the drivers of deforestation into
spatial analyses can help in the development of REDD+ strategies that are tailored to address the
deforestation drivers in different parts of the country. It can also help take into account where
drivers of deforestation, if unaddressed, are likely to push deforestation into areas with potential
